Abstract
Business dynamics is an important factor for the total productivity of the economy, generation
of employment and transformation of the productive structure. Although these aspects refer to
aggregate indicators, another part of the literature focuses on studying the features of the firms
that survive the longest, due to their importance on the performance of an economy. This
work focuses on analyzing the factor associated with business survival and death, using
methodological tools as the Kaplan Meier survival curves and Cox proportional hazard
regression. The information comes from the Laboratorio de Dinámica Laboral y Empresarial
del Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC) de Ecuador for the period 2009-2015,
which allowed to analyze the characteristics of the environment of the firms, characteristics of
the firms and the human capital that they use.
Regarding the environment and the
characteristics of the firms, the evidence is fairly similar to what is found in studies from other
countries. Regarding the characteristics of human capital, it was possible to determine that
firms with better survival prospects have balanced levels in characteristics as age, gender and
the share of employees with higher education. In addition, the relationship between the hazard
rate and the characteristics analyzed is not simple. In several cases, the relationship is non-
linear, which denotes the importance of making an adequate specification of the model and an
analysis of more complex analysis mechanisms.
Key words:
Firms survival, business demography, hazard rate.
JEL Classification:
C41, M13, L25.
